People use “junk car” and “salvage car” as if they mean the same thing. They do not, and the difference changes what the car is worth and who will buy it. Here is how we tell them apart when we price a car.
What a Junk Car Is
A junk car is at the end of its life on the road. It may not run, it may have years of rust, or the cost of keeping it going is more than the car is worth. Its value is in its parts and its metal, not in driving it again. Common signs:
- Major engine or gearbox failure.
- Heavy rust through the body or chassis.
- Unregistered for a long time, often sitting in a driveway or yard.
What a Salvage Car Is
A salvage car is one an insurer has declared a write off after an accident, hail, flood or theft. In Victoria, written off cars fall into two groups:
- Statutory write off. The damage is too severe. The car can never be registered again and is only good for parts or scrap.
- Repairable write off. The car may return to the road, but only after repairs and an inspection under strict rules.

What Each One Is Worth
For a junk car, the price comes mainly from weight, metal prices and any parts that are still in demand. For a salvage car, it depends on the make, model, year and which parts survived the damage. Selling a Car With a Salvage Title in Victoria
Australia does not use salvage titles. In Victoria, a car an insurer writes off is recorded on the Written-Off Vehicle Register as either a repairable write-off or a statutory write-off.
