A damaged car is still worth money. If you want to sell a damaged car in Melbourne without paying for repairs first, we can help. Victorian Car Buyers is a licensed motor car trader (LMCT 12395) based in Delahey that buys cars for cash across Melbourne and Victoria, including cars with accident damage, mechanical faults and cars that no longer run.
Call Steve on 0455 776 443 or send the details through the form. Tell us what is wrong with the car and we will give you a straight answer.
Will You Buy My Car With Damage?
Yes. We buy cars in any condition and pay on the spot by cash, bank transfer or bank cheque. You do not need a roadworthy certificate, you do not need to fix anything first, and there is no pickup fee, even if the car has to be collected on a truck.
Damage We Buy
Accident and Body Damage
Panel damage, a bent bumper, broken lights or a car that has been in a bigger collision. We look at what the car is worth as it sits and make an offer on that basis.
Engine and Gearbox Problems
A blown head gasket, a slipping gearbox or an engine that has seized can cost more to repair than many owners want to spend. We buy these cars as they are, so the repair bill never becomes your problem.
Hail and Storm Damage
Hail dents and storm damage hurt the look of a car far more than the way it drives. Our guide explains what hail damaged cars are worth in Victoria.
Written Off Cars
In Victoria a written off vehicle is recorded as either a repairable write off or a statutory write off. A repairable write off can only go back on the road after it is repaired and passes the required inspection. A statutory write off can never be registered again. We can buy both. Check the current rules with VicRoads, and read our guide on what to do when insurance writes your car off.
Cars That Do Not Start or Have No Keys
A car that will not start, or one with a lost key, can still be sold. We explain how in our guide to selling a car with no key.
Should I Fix My Car or Sell It As Is?
Fix it only if the repair costs clearly less than the value it adds. For many older cars it does not. A big repair, or the work needed to pass a roadworthy for a private sale, can cost more than the difference in price.
Get a repair quote and an offer from us, then compare the two numbers. These guides go deeper: what is worth fixing before you sell and the roadworthy trap.
How We Value a Damaged Car
We start with what the car would be worth in good order, then allow for the damage. We usually pay between $500 and $30,000, and more for higher value cars.
- Make, model and year. Popular cars hold value even when damaged.
- Kilometres. Lower kilometres help, whatever the fault.
- Type of damage. A dented door is very different to a failed engine.
- What still works. Good parts, tyres and interior all add value.
- Registration. We buy registered and unregistered cars.
Be upfront about the damage when you call. The more accurate the description, the closer our first figure will be to the final offer.

What Melbourne Sellers Say About Victorian Car Buyers
Damaged Car FAQs
Do I need a roadworthy certificate to sell a damaged car?
No. We are a licensed motor car trader, so you can sell to us without a roadworthy certificate. That is often the main reason owners of damaged cars come to us instead of selling privately.
My car has a defect notice. Can I still sell it?
Yes. A defect notice does not stop you selling the car to us. Our guide covers what to do after a defect notice.
Will you collect a car that cannot be driven?
Yes. If the car does not run we collect it on a truck. There is no pickup fee.
Is a very old or scrap car a different service?
If the car is at the end of its life and you mainly want it gone, our old car removal service is the better fit. If the car still has value apart from its fault, this is the right page.
How am I paid?
By cash, bank transfer or bank cheque, paid on the spot when we buy the car.
