If you need cash quickly and you own your car outright, pawning it can look like the easy answer. You hand the car to a pawnbroker, walk away with a loan and collect the car when you pay it back. In Melbourne plenty of people search for this every week. Before you choose a car pawnbroker, it helps to know how the deal really works, what the law in Victoria says and what it costs. We have bought cars across Melbourne for over 20 years and we see the other side of these deals often, so here is a plain guide.
How Car Pawning Works in Melbourne
A pawn is a loan secured by goods you leave with the lender. With a car, the pawnbroker inspects it, offers a loan amount and keeps the car and usually the keys until you repay. You get a pawn ticket that shows the loan amount, the loan period and the fees.
The loan is usually well below what the car would sell for. The pawnbroker needs room to cover storage, fees and the cost of reselling the car if you do not come back. If you repay the loan and fees within the agreed period, you get your car back. If you do not, the pawnbroker can sell it.
What the Law in Victoria Says
Pawnbrokers in Victoria must be registered and follow rules set by Consumer Affairs Victoria. The key ones for car owners are:
- The pawnbroker must fix the loan period when you pawn the car.
- Pawned goods must be held unchanged for at least seven days before they can be disposed of.
- You can redeem the car with your pawn ticket, proof of identity and the amount owing, even after the loan period ends, as long as it has not been sold.
- Unredeemed goods must be offered for sale at the best price reasonably obtainable.
- A pawnbroker must not buy goods that were pawned with them.
Registered pawnbrokers are exempt from some national credit rules. That means they do not have to run the affordability checks a bank or car lender must run. Costs can be high as a result. In a Federal Court ruling in December 2025, a Victorian pawnbroker was found to have charged rates equal to 480% a year, about ten times the lawful limit in Victoria, and more than 2,000 contracts were declared void.
Choosing a Car Pawnbroker in Melbourne: What to Check
Melbourne has general pawn shops and a smaller number of lenders that deal in cars. Wherever you go, check these points before you sign:
- Registration. Ask for their registration details and confirm the business name matches the paperwork.
- Total cost. Ask for the full repayment figure in dollars for the whole loan period, not just a weekly or monthly fee.
- Loan period and extensions. Know the exact end date and what happens if you need more time.
- Storage and insurance. Ask where the car is kept and who covers damage while it is stored.
- What happens if you cannot repay. Ask how and when the car would be sold.
If a lender says you can keep driving the car, it is not a pawn. That is a secured car loan with different rules, which we explain in our guide on whether you can pawn your car and still drive it.
What Pawning a Car Really Costs
The fees on a pawn loan add up quickly because the loan periods are short. A fee that sounds small each month can work out to a very high yearly rate. If you extend the loan more than once, you can end up paying more in fees than the original loan amount.
The other cost is the car itself. If you cannot repay in time, you lose a car that may be worth far more than the money you borrowed. Many people who pawn a car to cover a short term gap end up losing it.
When Selling Your Car Makes More Sense
Pawning makes sense when the cash need is short, you are certain you can repay and you can manage without the car while it is stored. If any of those is unclear, selling usually leaves you with more money and no debt.
When you sell, you get the full value of the car, not a fraction of it, and there are no fees or interest. We compare both options side by side in pawning vs selling your car. If you want to see how a pawn works step by step, read how to pawn a car and what you need.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I pawn my car in Melbourne?
Yes, if you own it outright. A registered pawnbroker holds the car as security, lends you money and returns the car when you repay the loan and fees.
How much will a pawnbroker lend on a car?
Usually well below the car’s resale value, because the pawnbroker needs room to cover fees and resale if the loan is not repaid.
Can I get my car back after the loan period ends?
In Victoria you can still redeem it with your ticket, ID and the amount owing, as long as the pawnbroker has not sold it yet.
